It is not true that one dog year is equivalent to seven human years. For calculating age, the size and weight of the dog are much more important. In general, a dog is considered old when he or she has reached three-quarters of his or her life expectancy.

An inscription on the Cosmati Pavement in Westminster Abbey, dating back to 1268, states that one human year is equivalent to nine years. Later on, in the 1950 s, dogs had two years trimmed off their lifespan and the 7-year rule became popular. This 7:1 ratio was based on pure logic and statistics.

For an easier (and also accurate) way to estimate your dog’s age, you can follow this methodology for small, medium, and large dogs under 100 lbs. The first year of a dog’s life is equal to 15 human years. The second year of a dog’s life is equal to about nine human years. Each additional year is equal to about four or five human years.

For many years the standard advice was that in order to get the human years equivalent, one needs to simply multiply the dog age by seven. So a two year old dog would have a human age equivalent to a 14-yeard old adolescent.

There are many tables for converting between dog years (age) and human years (age). Many of them use a very simple calculation e.g. 1 dog year equals 7 human years. The following converter not only provides much more accurate information, it identifies the choices that you can make to help your dog live longer and age more slowly.
